Learning Point: What makes cows milk? Do cows ever take a break from milking?
Did you know that a cow will never start to produce milk until she
has her first baby called a calf. Having a calf begins the
start
of milking called lactation.
After calving, cows must be milked 2 to 3 times everyday
for about 300 days. Cows enjoy being milked. They are milked
8 to 12 hours, weekends and holidays included!
After
cooling and sampling the milk a licensed milk handler pumps the
milk to a tanker where it goes to become your favorite dairy
product. Most of our milk comes back to central Ohio schools for
your
enjoyment.
Just like your parents, cows take a vacation each year. After
making all that milk for all those days, cows rest and relax for 65
days straight! This is called a dry period. Our cows’
vacation spot is 120 acres of brilliant green
grass, rolling hills, and beautiful streams.
